Horizontal Study directs attention at the evolution of personal narratives and their implications on both individual and collective memory. Focusing her lens on a selection of migrating artefacts – primarily found objects related to her personal lineage – from a bird’s-eye view, Azoulay produces an autobiographical archive, and takes responsibility in her transfer of visual information through their arrangement in nine “Pandora boxes.” By reframing fragments of the familial and placing them alongside artifacts that represent parallel histories, Azoulay unravels the specificity and singularity inherent in modes of storytelling to reveal the personal aspect behind its mechanisms.
